Batalha

Batalha is a town in the Central region of Portugal, in Pinhal Litoral, about 120 km north of Lisbon. Its main monument is the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, built in the 14th century by King John I to celebrate the victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the monastery is one of the finest examples of late Gothic and Manueline architecture in Portugal. The town grew around the monastery and retains a quiet historic centre with narrow streets and traditional buildings.
