Aveiro grew around its Ria, a coastal lagoon that runs through the city in canals crossed by traditional moliceiro boats. The historic centre mixes Art Nouveau facades, a fish market and the local ovos-moles sweets.

The moliceiro is a traditional boat of the Ria de Aveiro, originally used for harvesting seaweed. Today, tourist trips navigate the city canals, offering views of Aveiro from the water and the painted art on the boats.

Aveiro's historic centre features Art Nouveau buildings along streets such as Rua de Coimbra and Praça do Rossio. The colourful tiles and ornate façades reflect the bourgeois influence of the early 20th century.

Costa Nova is a beach on the Ria de Aveiro known for its wooden houses with colourful vertical stripes, called palheiros. Originally used by fishermen to store equipment, they have become architectural icons of the region.

Aveiro's salt pans, such as those in Eixo and São Roque, continue to produce sea salt and are part of ecotourism routes. The eco-trails and boardwalks allow for birdwatching and views of the Ria landscape.
