Alcobaça

Alcobaça is a town in the Oeste region of Portugal, known for its Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. The monastery, with its imposing church and Gothic cloisters, was one of the most important monastic centres in Europe. The town grew around the monastery and retains a historic centre with narrow streets and traditional buildings. The surrounding area is also known for fruit production, particularly apples, and for conventual sweets.
