Housed in the former Convent of Santo Agostinho, the amazing Museum of Leiria has opened its doors to the public. The museum collection has spent 97 years in several venues of the city, but now it is finally gathered in this renewed building. The museum tells the story of the city in the most surprising way!

The Museum of Leiria is chronologically organised. There is a permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition room that currently hosts a work on the 5 thousands years of the occupation of the place where we can now find the Castle of Leiria. The museum has also a conservation and restoration lab, a documentation centre, a research centre, an education centre, a multi-purpose room and a reservation zone.

The main highlights of the museum are: the fossils of Guimarota (fossils of primitive mammals that are 150 million years-old), references of world palaeontology and Menino do Lapedo (a fossil of a child from Initial Upper Palaeolithic that was found in Lapedo Valley in Leiria in 1998), a very important finding of human evolution.

The history of Leiria is presented in great detail: from the construction of the castle to the Roman city of Collipo, the pine wood of Leiria and Leiria as dioceses city.

The museum also comprises a great collection of archaeology, sculpture, ancient and contemporary painting.
