Idanha-a-Velha

Idanha-a-Velha

It has probably been founded during the 1st century BC over the ruins of the Roman city of Igaeditanorum. The Visigoths have settled here and by this time Egitania became the seat of a Diocese. Then in 713 the Muslims came! D. Afonso Henriques donated these lands to the Knights Templar and in the 14th century the old Idanha became a possession of the Order of Christ. The walls, probably of Roman origin, have been rebuilt in the mediaeval period. The keep with its quadrangular shape sets upon the podium of a Roman temple.
